Pandemics

The current global health landscape is characterized by an uptick in COVID-19 cases, as indicated by increased activity in the US and concerns over reinfections leading to persistent symptoms. Concurrently, the spread of avian influenza (H5N1) in various regions, including human cases in Cambodia, and the emergence of MERS cases in Saudi Arabia highlight the ongoing threat of zoonotic diseases. Despite advancements in vaccine technology and deployment, such as the support for mRNA platforms and fast-tracking of monoclonal antibodies, public health efforts are hampered by misinformation and vaccine hesitancy, as seen in the US. These factors, coupled with the financial and healthcare burdens of long COVID, underscore the need for vigilant surveillance and robust public health responses to mitigate the risk of widespread outbreaks.
